Shipping & Returns

Sellers can offer four possible methods to get their product to the buyer:

  • Free Local Pickup

  • Free Shipping

  • Flat Rate Shipping

  • Calculated Cost Shipping

Below is a guide to the four delivery methods and the responsibilities of the Seller and Buyer for each.

Prices and options will vary according to the product, its origin and its destination.

Free Local Pickup

Free Local Pickup allows the Buyer to pick up an item in person from the Seller. It allows the Buyer and Seller to avoid shipping costs!

For the Buyer!

Obligations

  • Buyers must travel to the location specified by the Seller, i.e. in the postcode indicated on the item’s listing.
  • Buyer must be appropriately equipped to pick-up the item i.e. a car/van for larger items.

For the Seller!

Obligations

  • Seller must select ‘Free Local Pickup’ in their shipping options when listing their product, and include the Suburb, State and post code from where the item is to be picked up
  • Seller must contact the Buyer within 3 business days to coordinate a pickup
  • Sellers must ensure the item is prepared and available for pickup at the agreed-upon location, date and time.

Free Shipping

Free Shipping is offered to the Buyer at the Seller’s expense.

For the Buyer!

  • Buyers receive confirmation of the shipment via email.
  • Once the item has been shipped, it typically takes 5-10 days to arrive, depending on the distance between the Buyer and the Seller.
  • If the item is being shipped via courier, the Buyer must sign for the receipt of the item unless an ATL (Authority to Leave) has been specified in the purchase notes at checkout. So make sure you specify an ATL if you want the item to be dropped off when no one’s home!
  • For any questions regarding the whereabouts of your items, Buyers should contact the Seller directly.

For the Seller!

Free Shipping is a great way to attract more buyers! It can be used for smaller items where the item can be packed into a pre-paid satchel and the cost can be absorbed into the listed price.

Obligations:

Seller covers all shipping costs for their item, including but not limited to:

  • Packaging their items for shipping
  • Creating and/or printing shipping labels
  • Insuring their item for loss or damages in transit
  • Posting their items to the Buyer’s address
  • Seller must ship the item within 1-5 business days

After shipment:

  • Seller must confirm the item has been dispatched by ‘completing’ the order on the Seller dashboard. Kitsch please needs to know your item has been shipped!
  • Upon request, Seller must be able provide Kitsch please with evidence of dispatch – i.e. a tracking number or shipping receipt. So save your receipts!

Flat Rate Shipping

Flat Rate Shipping is a set of fixed delivery prices per geographical location, set by the Seller. Costs range depending on the size and weight of the item. If you choose to offer Flat Rate Shipping, it’s a good idea to research average costs for similar items to determine a fair rate. In some cases, you may choose to have one flat rate for Australia wide postage, or different flat rates for different locations around Australia.

For the Buyer!

  • A Flat Rate Shipping drop-down menu is published on the shipping tab on the product page, and the Buyer selects which geographical region is applicable to them. The relevant dollar amount (set by the Seller for that location) is added to the shopping cart with that product.
  • Buyers receive confirmation of the shipment via email.
  • Once the item has been shipped, it typically takes 5-10 days to arrive, depending on the distance between the Buyer and the Seller and whether an express option has been offered.

Flat Rate Shipping is an easy to use shipment option where you set your own rates, which are then published on the item’s listing. Flat Rate Shipping is best for small to medium items such as lamps, art, stools, small tables etc. that can’t be sent via Australia Post.

Actual shipping costs range depending on the size and weight of the item, so it’s a good idea to research average costs for similar items to determine a fair rate.

Suggested Carriers

Smart Send, InterparcelPack and Send, uShip.

Obligations:

Prior to shipment, the Seller must:

  • Properly package their items for shipping
  • Acquire insurance for the shipment of their item
  • Create and/or print shipping labels
  • Seller must ship the item within 1-5 business days

After shipment:

  • Seller must confirm the item has been dispatched by ‘completing’ the order on the Seller dashboard. Kitsch please needs to know your item has been shipped!
  • Upon request, Seller must be able provide Kitsch please with evidence of dispatch i.e. a tracking number or shipping receipt. So save your receipts!

Calculated Cost Shipping

Calculated Cost Shipping allows the Buyer to calculate the shipping cost per product using the Australia Post Shipping Calculator, which uses the origin and destination of the product as well as its size and weight to determine a shipping cost.

The Seller enters the item’s size and weight, as well as the postcode from where the item will be shipped. The shipping calculator will then appear in the Shipping tab on the product page. Buyers enter their postcode here for the shipping calculation.

The calculated amount is then added to the shopping cart with the item.

** The Australia Post Shipping Calculator can only be used for parcels with a maximum width of 1.05 metres and maximum weight of 22 kilograms.

For the Buyer!

  • Buyers simply need to input their destination postcode into the Australia Post Shipping Calculator to find out the cost of shipping the item to their address.
  • Buyers pay for the Calculated Shipping at checkout
  • Buyers must enter a correct delivery postcode for an accurate calculated shipping
  • Buyers receive confirmation of the shipment via email.
  • Once the item has been shipped, it typically takes 5-10 days to arrive, depending on the distance between the Buyer and the Seller.
  • If the item is being shipped via courier, the Buyer must sign for the receipt of the item unless an ATL (Authority to Leave) has been specified in the sale
  • So make sure you specify an ATL if you want the item to be dropped off when no one’s home!
  • For any questions regarding the whereabouts of your items, Buyers should contact the Seller directly.

For the Seller!

The Calculated Shipping Cost calculator allows the Buyer to find out the cost of shipping via Australia post directly on item’s listing. Buyers simply need to click on the Shipping tab and input their postcode and a calculated shipping cost will be generated based on the item’s size, weight and origin.

Obligations:

Prior to shipment, the Seller must:

  • Properly package their items for shipping
  • Acquire insurance for the shipment of their item
  • Create and/or print shipping labels
  • Enter the correct origin post code. PO boxes and invalid post codes are not accepted!
  • Enter the correct size and weight of the item. Remember that the packing material and box weighs a bit too!

Notes on shipping

For the Buyer!

  • Courier services are unable to deliver to PO Boxes; all deliveries to PO Boxes must be served using Australia Post.
  • All deliveries made by courier need to be signed for on delivery, unless an ATL (Authority to Leave) has been specified on the purchase notes at Checkout.
  • In leaving an ATL, the Buyer should also specify the most secure place to leave the package.
  • If Buyers provide an ATL, the Buyer accepts all responsibility for missing packages left by the courier.
  • In the absence of an ATL, buyers are responsible for having someone at the delivery address to sign for and receive the delivery.
  • Buyers are responsible for any freight charges or re-delivery costs incurred as a result of failure to sign on delivery or if incorrect shipping details are provided at Checkout.

For the Seller!

  • Kitsch please is not responsible for any damage that occurs during shipment.
  • Sellers are responsible for resolving any claims for loss or damage to their items.
  • Sellers are advised to purchase insurance to protect themselves against any loss or damages incurred in transit. Your chosen courier’s own terms and guarantees will apply, and any disputes or claims must be handled between you as the Seller, the Buyer, and the shipper/courier.
  • Watch out! Many insurance claims for damaged items in transit are denied based on ‘bad packaging’. So please take extra care when packing your items for shipping. See Packing tips below.
  • Sellers who are not comfortable packing their own items should consider taking the item to a shipping service, like Pack and Send, to have the item professionally packaged for shipping.
  • Sellers should consider the cost of packing materials when setting their shipping rates.

Just an idea: Private courier services may also be a competitively priced option for local deliveries within your town / city. Look in your local business directories / classified ads at local courier services that you may be able to develop a working relationship with.

International Shipping?

For the Seller!

If you wish to offer international shipping to our international site visitors, you may do so within your product listing. Simply select ‘Free Local Pickup’ as a shipping option, and in your item description, state that you are willing to organise international shipping at further cost, and quotes are available on request. TIP** This extra shipping cost can be invoiced directly to the buyer via a PayPal money request.

For the Buyer!

If you’re outside of Australia, you can contact the Seller via the ‘Ask Seller A Question’ tab to ask if the seller ships to your location.

Packing tips

For smaller items in a box

  • Why not recycle a used box where possible? Just ensure any old postage labels and addresses are either removed or covered.
  • Ensure the box is strong enough to hold and protect your item, and is slightly larger than the item/s you are posting to allow enough room for your protective packing material.
  • Make sure to tape and reinforce all seams and openings of the box, and use a ‘FRAGILE’ or ‘THIS WAY UP’ sticker if necessary.
  • Finally, mark the box with a complete and correct address, and include your return address.

When wrapping items to put in box

  • Wrap each item individually, and place items that might be damaged by dirt or moisture into a plastic bag and seal before wrapping.
  • Use bubble wrap or packing foam to wrap your items, paying particular attention to sharp edges, protrusions and very fragile items. We recommend reusing these materials, like bubble wrap, where possible.
  • Use bubble wrap, biodegradable foam chips or ‘scrunched up’ recycled newspaper to fill space within the box to prevent your items moving around in transit. If you are using newspaper, ensure items are well covered as the newspaper ink may transfer.

Furniture

  •
Disassemble the furniture where possible, and either secure or remove and pack separately any legs, drawers etc that may come loose in transit.
  • Protect edges and corners with bubble wrap, blankets, cardboard edges or a combination of all three. You can secure these into place using plastic stretch wrap.
  • Place any pillows or cushions in plastic bags or wrap to protect the fabric.
  • Where possible, pack in a rigid cardboard box with sufficient cushioning.
  • See your courier’s guidelines for further requirements.

Electronics

  • Find an appropriately sized box for your item. Line the box with bubble wrap or an anti-static cushioning.
  • Secure any cables with twist ties to prevent tangling.
  • Wrap the item thoroughly using bubble wrap or packing foam. Place in box and fill any space around the item with bubble wrap, biodegradable foam chips or ‘scrunched up’ recycled newspaper.
  • Use a ‘FRAGILE’ or ‘THIS WAY UP’ sticker if necessary.
  • See your courier’s guidelines for further requirements.

Lampshades

  • Lampshades should be packed separately in their own box.
  • Find an appropriately sized box and line with bubble wrap or packing foam (do not use newspaper – the ink will transfer onto the shade)
  • Place the shade in box. Do not fill extra space with packing material.
  • Seal and mark box ‘FRAGILE: LAMPSHADES’
  • See your courier’s guidelines for further requirements.

Art, prints and posters

  •
For framed art with glass, apply masking tape in an ‘X’ shape across the entire surface of the glass
  • Wrap item in several layers of bubble wrap, and secure two pieces of rigid, corrugated cardboard to either side. Tape together along the edges.
  • See your courier’s guidelines for further requirements.
